Nystagmus

Nystagmus refers to involuntary, repetitive movements of the eyes — typically side-to-side, though sometimes up-down or in a circular pattern — that the child cannot consciously control. It can be present from early infancy or appear later, and may occur on its own or alongside other vision conditions.

Because nystagmus can stem from several different underlying causes — ranging from issues with visual development in the eyes themselves to conditions related to the nervous system — a thorough diagnostic work-up is essential before deciding on a management plan. Our evaluation includes a detailed eye examination, assessment of vision function, and where required, coordination with pediatric neurology for further investigation. Management is tailored to the underlying cause and may include correcting refractive errors, using specific viewing strategies to reduce the movement's impact on vision, or in select cases, surgical options. Our focus throughout is on maximising the child's functional vision and monitoring development closely over time.
